    [HCM Son & Amiodarone]

Who has had any experience with this drug, and does it help fast heart rates? My 17 yr old has just been put on amiodarone. He claims he is having more fast heart rates, and near black outs since he has had a defibulater placement, then put on amiodarone.

    Dear Mary,

17 is very young to be on amiodarone. Is your son seeing a specialist? Amio should be making his heart rate slower. What other drugs is he on or has tried?

Here is the prescribing info on amio (in English): http://www.mayoclinic.com/findinform...8080AEBC2F0839

If the link doesn't work, go to mayoclinic.com, drug search, and enter amiodarone in the search window.

What has the doctor to say about this situation?

    Sarah

Thank you for your reply so quickly. My son is seeing the same doctor he has seen since he was diagnosed at the age of 9. Dr. Charles Gaymes at University Mississippi Medical Center. He started him out on Verapamil for the first year, then installed a pacemaker at the age of 10, at the age of 12 he had to have a myomectomy. This surgery did WONDERS for him and for years he has been pretty symptom free (lived a pretty NORMAL life) until about 4 months ago. He started having chest pains, heart racing, black outs, etc. The doctor then started him on a beta-blocker, but with no improvement. So, they took the pace maker out, and implanted a difibulator. He has been shocked so many times from the device; he seems to stay in the hospital most of the time. He then had another black out, so that is when his physician decided to admit him into the hospital for 5 days and put him on amiodarone. He is still having so much trouble, but fortunately I was able to take him to his first pro football game in his life this Sunday. He had to rest going up a few flight of stairs, had some racing, but we got through the game and at home just fine! Now, for the first time since diagnosed, I am truly afraid. My 6yr old son was diagnosed at the age of 4 also. No treatment as of yet.
