[how often should I have an echo?]

    Author: Cynthia (---.dialup.mindspring.com)

    Date: 12-05-02 07:07

I have been seeing a top cardiologist for several years for HCM. I have a check up once a year....a few times I have seen him twice/yr. My last echo was 4 years ago. I'm having one tomorrow as I've had a vascular problem occur in my lung when having bronchitis. Is it normal to have one every year or couple of years? How often has anyone had theirs?

I think that they try to do them every five years. I personally have had two this year and with the later my diagnosis was changed from non-obstructive to obstructive HCM. I am guessing that they will be keeping a closer eye on it now that it is obstructive. Don't know if this helps you or not.

I've never gone more than 2 years without an echo. I was diagnosed at 13 and I'm 33 (almost 34!) now and it was probably once a year in till my mid-20s.

I believe it must have to do with your severity, obstructed, non-obstructed, symptoms, arrythmia.

I know my first 20 years I was going every two years for the echo and annually for a visit to HCM specialist.

In those 20 years there was never a change and I have been able to live a pretty normal life.

I went 10 years until I had one this past spring and there was still no change, although I still go annually for my HCM visit.

    No easy answer I guess.

I have an echo everytime I visit my doctor. That must be a bad sign. I have really never thought about it that way. I am going back next Wednesday for another echo. I had an ICD installed in late April. Take care everyone

I think this varies. My husband is Chuck--who replied earlier--We have two sons and they--so far, have been told to have echos every 3 yrs--they are going to go again soon-I think this will change, though-as my oldest is turning 13--once they start that growth period--things change--I can only hope for good news. Chuck--my hubby--had an ICD installed in July--

Dealing with HMOs is such a apin. They don't want to do anything to help with this issue. I am surprized that they refered me to Oregon Health Sciences University for my ICD. Roxann and I get so frustrated with them.

Three years is far too long for a child! It should be every 12-18 months, this is the time big changes can happen and very fast. In one case a child had a normal echo and in less then 6 months returned for shortness of breath...a new echo showed severe hypertrophy..in only 6 months. 3 years is far too long, get a new ins. company if you must, pay for it on your own, but please do not wait 3 years.

    Best wishes,

    Lisa

    Lisa,

I could not agree with you more. The more I read about this disease the more I learn. Where are the people that specialize in HCM located. We live in Oregon so not sure where to go for a specialist.

    Thanks,

    Chuck
