[Ejection fraction]

My son age 15 who has HCM had an echo done today. the cardiologist mentioned hat his ejection fraction dropped to 58 from 68.....what does this mean...can anyone enlighten me..thanks..

Dear Ron,
That is how much blood is leaving the heart when it beats. It should be above 50-55 and in the 55-75 range.
Have you talked to Lisa about seeing a specialist?

Please do call...but I would not panic... anything over 50 is "normal" - those with HCM tend to have high EF's. A specialist is always a good idea.
