    [doctor not paying attention]

    Author: Karen (---.ns.sympatico.ca)

I need some advice. I have recently been getting quite dizzy and my shortness of breath has gotten worse. I am on 100mg of metropol in morning and night. I have started to get chest pains again. When I called the cardiologist office to get an appointment they told me that I was scheduled for a follow up in March 2003, and they would see me then. If I felt that I needed to be seen before this to call my family doctor. I did call the family doctor and they said they could give me an appointment in January 2003. The question is should I be concerned with these symptoms. I had myectomy in 1987.

I would see a new cardiologist ... primarily one that specializes in HCM!

My dad's cardiologist has the same ignorance ... years later he learns he has needed an ICD all this time! I tell ya ... the medical world is very discouraging!

    Dear Karen,

It sounds like you have doctors who work when the insurance pays them, not when you need them. I would change (if you can), see what your insurance will cover, and call the office to get the number of an HCM specialist (973-983-7429).

however, unless you are in MN, Boston, NY, or Cleveland, you will have to travel to see a top specialist and your immediate medical concerns need to be met by a competent cardiologist --check and see if there is anyone we recommend in your area and ask around --but get to a doctor soon.

I am of Nova Scotia, and there doesn't seem to be any doctors in this area that specialize in HCM. or I should say none that I know of. It does not seem to be as common of a disease in Canada as in the US.

    Dear Karen,

My aunt Pamela lives in Nova Scotia and has HCM. I'll ask her who she sees.

That is not acceptable. If you are a member of an HMO, call patient relations department. That's what I have done in the past. BELIEVE me....they can "squeeze" you in for an appointment. Your symptoms are not to be taken lightly. You need to be forceful and demand to see a specialist immediately...take care and best of luck

    Dear Cynthia,

She is in Canada, and it is very different up there.
