[Defibulator for 3-year old]

Again I write concerning the defibulator for my son Brandon. There are two children's hospitals here in St. Louis. Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children's Hospital. I was wondering if anyone out there is familiar with which hospital is better equipped in handling placing Defibulators in a 3-year old. Otherwise, what questions do I ask to find out which one is best. Right now I go to a doctor at Cardinal Glennon. I am very happy so far. However my niece (15) goes to a doctor at St. Louis Children's Hospital. She is having a defibulator placed in two weeks. Her doctor states that St. Louis Children's Hospital is better equipped for children than Cardinal Glennon. Even though Cardinal Glennon is a children's hospital and has a pediatric cardiology department.

I was thinking about asking which hospital has done more successful surgeries than the other on children so small. What are other questions I should ask? I have left a phone message with Lisa in hopes for answers also. Any thoughts are helpful. Thanks!

Dear Kay,

You should definitely ask who is going to do the procedure (or who does them) and how many they've done, what their success rate is, what kind of complications do they usually have, how do they get resolved, and what kind of follow up care do they provide.

You may want to take your son to an HCM specialist either in Chicago or out of state entirely, too. When being seen out-of-state, follow ups can be coordinated with a local cardiologist so you are not flying out of town for every check up.
