    [Not impressed with doctor!]

    Author: Sherri (---.natcpe.cableone.net)

    Date: 11-13-02 00:25

Hello, I wrote a few weeks ago about my 15 yr son. We had went to the ER, he was having chest pain and a hard time breathing(this is not the first time) and the ER doc suspected HCM. He went the next day for an echo, the report was sent to out family Dr. Our family dr refered him to a cardiologist. to make a long story short...we finally got to see the card. last week. this is how the visit went. He walked into the room, looked at the report from the echo for about 30-40 seconds, asked my son to describe the pain, listened to his chest for less than a full minute...at this point( in the room approx. 3 min) he pushed his chair back and said sounded like growing pains to him and that he didn't have to come back unless we needed him! Am I being unreasonable here? I think this guy's full of sh*t. I'd love nothing more than for this to be growing pains, but he did no further testing to base his conculsions on. Again tonight my son had chest pain, he went pale, blue around the lips and weak, he looked at me and said "i guess i must be growing!" the one thing I am thankful for is that the echo didn't show anything unusual in size or shape of the heart, but I feel like something is going on. Just needed to vent! I wanted to scream at the dr office but didn't want to upset my son.

Not sure what to do from here. Do we wait and see or should I pursue another dr?

Thank you so much for the support from you guys when I first posted here. sorry this turned out to be so long.

    Sherri

I think you need to consult with another doctor. My name is Heath, Heather is my sister. I get on here occassionally. It sounds to me like your son does have a problem that needs to be further investigated. I didn't ever have growing pains like that. My sister was diagnosed at 14 with having HCM and is in minnasota now at the age of 30 having a pace maker put in right now. In fact she will be home tomorrow. before this she was having alot of problems, even had a TIA about two weeks ago. I think you need to get your child checked out. My sister's heart condition caused her to go into A-fib which caused the clot that caused the TIA. She never even knew she was in A-fib. I have heard with HCM that the heart can even go into V-fib which is also known as sudden death. Trust me it is better to go the extra mile and get him checked out now than to wait. My dad also had a heart condition and the docs waited around too long to do anything surgically for him and he died of a heart attack before he could ever get on a transplant list. So put your mind at ease and get your child checked out so that he can lead a long life.

If I were you, I would INSIST upon seeing another Dr. This guy is not doing you any favors. You should trust your son when he says he doesn't feel normal. If you have a family Dr. that you trust, then ask for another referral. If you lived close to a teaching hospital, I would go there. Find someone who will listen to your son.

Since when is turning blue and chest pain and sob "growing pains"???? No one is going to back that bozo with that diagnosis.

Please call the HCMA TOMORROW and get a name of someone you can take your son to ASAP. 973-983-7429. Heck, leave a message tonight and someone will call you when they get in.

    Hi Sherri -

I'll chime in here and tell you to trust your instincts and get your son to another doctor!

I have NO CLUE why 'doctors' look at something that is NOT normal and chalk it up to something simple - in your son's case 'growing pains'. That's just ridiculous.

My husband's EKG was extraordinarily abnormal and the doctor told him his 'abnormal EKG' was 'normal for him'. For almost 2 years he complained of chest pain and fatigue. He was also told by yet another doctor that he was 'too young' for it to be a heart problem. This end result was a misdiagnosis of depression. Even when the meds he took didn't help, they would simply switch them and not explore other possibilities.

Even once he was properly diagnosed, we have had to deal with the frustration of apathy, arrogance and ignorance with loca-yocal cardioligsts when it comes to HCM treatment. My husband finally took the advice of HCMA and just left yesterday to see a specialist at Cleveland Clinic.

Don't waste your time with doctors that are clueless!

Hi Sherri. I have read your message and subsequent replies and am ashamed at how badly you were treated.

I see that most people are urging you to see another physician, which I whole-heartedly agree with.

However, if you want, you can also report the "10-second" physician to your state licensing board for Unethical Medical Practice.

I am not sure of how things work in the USA, but here in Canada all patient complaints must be reviewed by the investigative committee in each province.

If you want to take this route, I suggest you go to the American Medical Association website (www.ama-assn.org). Follow the links PATIENTS/ETHICS/Reporting Ethical Violations.

Also check out the Code of Ethics book on-line. Search for keywords: mistakes (8.12); Neglect of Patient (10.01) and Test Results (8.095). Also the Principles of Medical Ethics Preable, Article I and VIII make good reading.

I don't believe anymore that we should accept shoddy medical treatment from physicians. Our lives are at stake here and sometimes is seems that they don't give a darn.

I have reported terrible medical treatment of my father in the past and for me it offered some closure to the situation. I don't know if you want to spend the energy pursuing this complaint process as I know that your son's health is your most urgent concern right now.

Take care. I will say a little prayer to ask God to give you the strength and peace to see this through and for a quick diagnosis for your son and his health.

    Dan.

Thank you so much, at least I know I'm not crazy for thinking that the Dr. is! Sarah, I'm going to call the office this morning. Heather I hope your sister does well. Cynthia and Karla, I think gut instinct is well worth following through on! thanks for your thoughts. I hope and pray it's something as simple as growing pains, but I would rather know for sure. thank you all so much. I wish all of you the best. thanks again. I'll check in and let you know what we find out.

    Sherri,

I don't know what I can offer in the way of advice that others haven't already said. I agree that the doctor was way off base here. Please, please, please find a new doctor. Your son needs someone who can help him. I would also consider the option of reporting the intial cardiologist to the AMA. I want to say that I'll be praying you find the right person to see your son and that they are able to correctly diagnosis him and help him.

I talked to our family Dr today and he agrees completely with all of you! he said most definately see another card! I was worried he wouldn't want to refer him anywhere else because he had refered him to the first guy. He told me to get him the name of who we wanted to see and he would do the rest. I feel much better. Now I'm waiting to here from the HCMA office to hopefully get the name of a card somewhere close by. We're in Louisiana but I don't mind traveling if we need to. Thank you all for the words of support and advice. It's great to know there is somewhere to turn.
