  • Skipped Heart Beats

Has anyone experienced skipped heart beats? My myectomy, along with a mini-maze, was performed in April 2013. Since then, all of my doctor visit EKG's have been normal. I had a holter about 16 months ago and that came back normal as well. A few months ago, I noticed that my heart was occasionally skipping a beet. I feel perfectly fine (except for the skipped beat sensation) and notice that this comes and goes. There are long periods (weeks) of what I believe to be normal rhythm. Then occasionally I will notice skipped beats. Sometimes several in a minute, sometimes less. I've read that this could be caused by stress...or it could be something else. I will be calling my cardiologist but wanted to seek your input. Thank you.

I think with hcm it's very common.
It doesn't mean you shouldn't get it checked.

Actually skipped beats are considered " normal" even in people without HCM. Years ago I had a PCP give me the number of 6 skipped beats per minute or less was something he considered normal in any patient. The Holter is a good indicator. Usually skipped beats are troublesome depending on their origin ( atrium or ventricle) and their frequency, and whether they occur in " runs " for example, 6 PVCs ( premature ventricular contraction) in a row are MUCH more concerning than 6 random skipped beats. Extra beats can increase with stress, with decreased potassium or magnesium levels, exercise, or often times when blood levels of heart medications are dropping such as right before a scheduled dose of medication ( such as a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker) or if you are late taking your routine heart meds.....most of the time, for the occasional skipped beats you're describing, no particular cause may be found.
By all means talk to your cardio and see what he/she says.

Yes, this can be extremely common. It can also seem scary. Get checked out, but don't be surprised if they tell you not to worry at all. But of course you should get checked.
