Any ideas if red yeast rice and Gugal interfer with herrt function with hcm?
    thank you

  • #2
I think Red Rice Yeast has similar effects as statin drugs do. It would probably be advisable to do liver function tests etc if you will be using it.

I am not sure about other heart functions.

        supplements

While there isn't anything that will reduce the hypertrophy itself, there some key things for a healthy heart...

Water water water. Dehydration can mean death for HCMers.

Electrolytes: calcium, magnesium, and potassium. make sure you are getting enough. These are the chemicals that control the heart beat.

CoQ10: anecdotal evidence and the fact that betablockers can reduce this substance indicate that it could help heart function. Check with your doctor to make sure it won't interfere with any other medications.

If you take warfarin or Coumadin, watch the vitamin K intake, especially in multivitamins. Also, cranberries are high in K and is sometimes in herbal supplement mixes.

Gingko can thin your blood, as can vitamin e and flax and primrose oils.

Yerba mate has caffiene, so it should be avoided.

Dong quai is a vasodialator, also to be avoided in case of low blood pressure.

          Gary,
My Cardio reccommended I take Red Yeast Rice, as I cannot tolerate statins. So it does not seem to be contraindicated. However, for me, it had no impact, so I discontinued taking it. There are several brands on the market, my Doc suggested I purchase it @ Whole Foods.
My choleseral numbers are a nightmare, so I'm always open for ideas.
I've become a vegetarian & exercise (safely) daily.
