  • Growth in the Septum

Just wandering about increase in size in the septum. My exhusband was diagnosed when he was 36 and his septum measured around 19-20 when he was diagnosed. When they did the alcohol ablation a couple of weeks ago at Duke it was 45. I have heard several different opinions about when the growth stops. It seems that some feel that once you get through your teen age years, then it won't grow anymore.

As I have mentioned in other posts, my son's septum has gone from 13 to 21 in the last 7-8 weeks. He is turning 12 tomorrow and of course still has a lot of growing to do. He is 5 foot 6 inches right now. He has grown almost 6 inches in the last 11 months.

I guess what I am wandering, is it uncommon for the septum to continue to grow in thickness throughout your adulthood. From different things I have read it seems that most feel once you are full grown, then it will not increase anymore.

Anyway, just trying to understand how all this works! Thanks for any help! Janet

Your son is at the age where fast growth is expected - that is why we are so specific about annual screening from age 12-18 - that is when you see the changes most dramaticly.
As for your husband I would have to look at the records and see who and how the measurements were taken - it is possible that the measurements did not change but that the tech. measured differently each time.

I have to agree with the possibility that the echo was just off. My husband has a septum of about 3.8 or so, but has had echos that show it at 3.4, which isn't a lot different, and at 5.2, which is a huge difference. All of these echos were performed by different technicians at different hospitals.
