  • Mycobacterium NTM infections from Heater-Cooler used during open heart surgeries

Has anyone, besides me, been notified about the problem with the possible Mycobacterium chimaera NTM infections resulting from a heater-cooler unit used during open heart surgeries?

I was notified a few years ago by regular mail, then today I received a certified letter from the hospital where I had my Myectomy in spring of 2015.

This is the CDC link about the issue...

Wondering if anyone else is aware of this, had a surgery that involved the same brand of heater-cooler and/or has had any testing done.

I also find myself wondering if the hospital knew about the possible issue prior to my surgery.

Yes, I have heard of this and spoke to my surgeon at Mayo Clinic as soon as I heard about it. I also spoke to my PCP. Each hospital with the brand of cooler that was suspect, was to review all patients that were possibly exposed and notify them by letter. I never got a letter, so I assume I wasn't exposed.....My PCP discussed the possible exposure with the Infectious disease specialist so that we knew what symptoms to watch for. I can't recall the symptoms and time frame to watch for right now but I assume maybe that information is in your letter? My understanding is that the number of people who actually became infected is EXTREMELY low. Thank Heavens.
