  • Headed to Mayo in 4 days

I'm heading to see Dr. Dearani at Mayo Clinic for 2 days of testing and meetings and then Septal Myectomy on Wednesday, July 8. I was diagnosed with HOCM in 2011 after surviving Sudden Cardiac Death. Had an ICD implanted and eventually saw Dr. Marc Sherrid in NYC who has followed me since. Disopyramide worked for a while but after 3 years only helps marginally.
While having my 2 daughters checked by Dr. Robert Tozzi in Hackensack, NJ(Thankfully all clear), he checked me out as well to put together a family history and suggested sending all my records to Dr. Dearani. Mayo got back to me saying I looked like a good candidate for myectomy so after a little planning off we go.
I may sound strange to a healthy person but I'm a little excited about going for the surgery although maybe not so much the recovery. But, getting my life back to more normal will be more than worth it.

Doesn't sound strange to me, but I am only healthy(er) because I've had a myectomy with good results. My pre-op condition was not as complicated as yours - no SCD, arrythmia, ICD - but I was just as excited since I was getting close to getting handicapped plates for the car.
Very likely your recovery will be smoother than you think. I had a few aches explained later by bruised muscles from the operation, but they were temporary and easily treated. Otherwise I healed remarkably fast with minimal discomfort beyond the sore chest for a few weeks. You'll do great I'm sure. Have a great and safe 4th of July and good luck at Mayo. What a great way to top-off a holiday!

Jeffery - Best of luck. The HCM clinic there is the best and Drs. Ommen & Dearani are truly a solid team. Do read all the posts here to learn what to expect and you'll go in prepared, relaxed and eager to begin this new chapter in your life. Once you get home, walk, rest, breathe, repeat.
Congrats & don't forget to write!

Yes.....to a non-HCM person it may sound weird...but those who have suffered the symptoms of obstructive HCM for years...do get genuinely excited about getting their life back after myectomy. Ommen and Dearani were the team that got me to a much better life. I'm going back for a one year check up in a few weeks..... By then you will be home already, recovering nicely. You are in excellent hands....God Bless.

You'll be in great hands - and in a few weeks you should start feeling a big improvement in the way you feel.

Thanks for all your words of encouragement. I had the myectomy on July 8 and they threw in a double by-pass while they were under the hood. Yesterday had a followup visit and got the all clear to go home. Everything is either looking "normal" or as expected at this point. Still feeling tired and sore but everyday seems a little better. Sticking around for a few more days before flying home. I'm so glad I chose Mayo rather than my local hospital. This place is just amazing.

Now to find an HCM specialist in NJ just for followups and start cardiac rehab.

                Glad you're feeling better!

You might consider the HCM COE in Morristown.

That is where my search will be starting. My nephew's pediatric cardiologist is there but since he just turned 19 he will be looking for specialist as well. I pass by there everyday on the way to and from work. It would be very convenient.
