    Eva/Rania's Myectomy

    Hello my dear friends and Colleagues, Thank you so much for your friendship and support in the last 6 months. I will be going in to surgery in a few hours.

    I am doing well, and looking forward to a quick recovery and getting back to work soon. I miss my wonderful job.

    Treated for "Asthma" since 2004 and took Claritin-D every night for 3 years- while my "Asthma" got worse and worse.
    Mother has mild HOCM gradient of 25

    After much research, I had a Myectomy @ Mayo for my 50th Birthday '08
    Quietly going insane . . .

      Dx age 12 current age 46 and counting!
      lost: 5 family members to HCM (SCD, Stroke, CHF)
      Others diagnosed living with HCM (or gene +) include - daughter, niece, nephew, cousin, sister and many many friends!
      Therapy - ICD (implanted 97, 01, 04 and 11, medication
      Currently not obstructed
      Complications - unnecessary pacemaker and stroke (unrelated to each other)

          There is a brief update posted on Rania's page on thestatus.com: "Rania is out of surgery and it was successful. She is still sleeping but will be revived at around 2pm, EST." So good news so far.

          Rania, congratulations, you are on the other side of the surgery! Sending prayers and good wishes your way for a quick and smooth recovery

            Lisa, I can tell you first hand that U-M is first rate when it comes to heart surgery. Rania will be having Dr. Francis Pagani as her surgeon and the guy is one heckuva doctor. From the time I went into pre-op till I went home, the entire staff in the cardiac unit took excellent care of me. If you needed something, they were on the spot with it. I can't say enough about any of them. Rania is in good hands, believe me.

              Well, I am back!!!

              This will be very short as I am still somewhat spaced out.

              Today it is 8 days post-surgery and I wanted to THANK everyone who stood by me and supported me in words, deads, prayers or thoughts during this whole process. (Hey, I can still type and spell, (slowly) so I guess pump head is not so bad!)

              There is so much to tell in the next few weeks. And I will happily share it so others facing myectomy may benefit from my humble experience like I have benefitted trumendously from the experience of others before me.

              I also had my last pain pill at 11 am today and am going to try to "rough" it with OTC stuff, I hated how spaced out I became on the real stuff.

              My surgeon is/was amazing. Dr. Francis Pagani. He provided excellent care and came by to see me every day.

              Currently, my legs and feet look like stumps due to 20 lbs of water retention all centered in that area.

              My back pain post surgery is 10 times worse than the pain on the front.

              The incision is almost beautiful, and I will post a picture of it soon. I am not worried about the scar though I won't go crazy and get a Tattoo like Kevin!

              Post surgery: difficult pain management, but no A-fib, or any other complications, so I guess my recovery has been easy somewhat, but I don't know any better.

              Thank you to all the wonderful HCMrs who posted on my www.thestatus.com site. all of your love and comments were like a warm blanket around my heart.

                    Too bad your not going for the tattoo
                    Be well and don't over due it. Don't look for daily progress, look back every couple and be amazed at how fast your progressing.

                      Rania - Hurray! It is great to see you back here after your surgery. I hope that you continue to feel better every day. I personally found that once I gave up the prescription pain pills, I felt much better.

                      Remember to walk and blow in your incentive spirometer several times a day.

                        Welcome back to the world! Your experience sounds a bit like mine -- back pain worse than chest pain, and elephant feet where your little feet once were. All this will improve -- just keep walking, and hang in there!

                          Welcome back from the dark side of the moon! I experienced severe back and shoulder pain for weeks after my myectomy. My incision really didn't hurt that much, go figure. But, it will get better. I plan to resume my daily swimming activities next month.

                            Great to hear from you Rania! Congratulations on making it through the surgery. I ditched the narco laced Tylenol 3 after a few days home and had my wife get a big bottle of generic ibuprofen from Costco, and it seemed to do the trick. I somehow escaped the back and shoulder pain that many folks report, but I did get arrhythmia a couple of weeks down the road. So as others have said, keep walking but don't overdo it. Get all the naps in you want as well. As far as walking, I recall you considered getting a treadmill now that winter is settling in, and the good thing about that is that you can pace yourself in a very controlled manner with such a device. It may have helped me to not overdo it in my recovery. Or not.

                              Rania - So glad that everything came out as planned. Walk, Rest & Breathe in your inspirometer. Enjoy the break!

                              I just found my to-do list for my time off! I didn't do a darn thing! No mid-morning movies, No painting the family room (towards the end of recovery). All I did was walk, go to gym, walk, clean pool, walk.
                              The pool is clean & dog is 20 lbs lighter.

                              Enjoy this time with your family & friends.
