Re: myectomy tomorrow
I just want to wish you well on your surgery. Many thoughts and prayers.
They will know much more about your valve when they get in there. Mine was going to be a possibility of replacement. When they went in and shaved down the septum it corrected. NO replacement was needed.
I know others who have had replacement will hopefully weigh in before you head out. My BIL was going to have a valve replacement and he planned on the mechanical also. His was repairable when they got in.

Re: myectomy tomorrow
Ellie,
I had a mitral replacement- a fiber bovine tissue. from what I have heard the useful life span of a tissue valve is about 15 yrs.
I guess the choice is: go mechanical- take coumidan (sp?) or go tissue and do all this again in 15 yrs.
This is extreme cart before the horse. They may love your valves just the way they are : )

Re: myectomy tomorrow
I had a mechanical valve "installed" when I had my myectomy. (Hence my signature: Zapper [ICD], Zipper [myectomy scar] and Ticker [mitral valve]!)
Something I really didn't know before I got it was that I would be able to hear it tick. Like a Timex! It was unnerving at first; but after a while, I got used to it. My kids love to lay over on my chest and listen to it. It reassures them that everything is going to be ok. (Oh, just brought a tear to my eye typing that!)
I was also able to get a home testing kit though my insurance. I test my own blood every month. Well every week most of the time because I will forget to take my coumadin sometimes and it messes my counts up. Let me know if you do get the valve and I'll get you the info on the home tester.
Big hug for you tommorow. You are definately in my thoughts and I am sending happy, peaceful thoughts your way!!

All the best to you. You're in good hands with Dr. Swistel. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted on the outcome.
Hey, you're lucky you got to go home, I had to stay in the St. Luke's Hilton and wait for the surgery. Then again I'm old enough that they did a cardiac cath on me the day prior to surgery as well as the myectomy pre-op. The bonus being (at least for me) that they verified my arteries were clear.
Best wishes

Re: myectomy tomorrow
I'm posting for Ellie, surgery went as well as expected. Repaired valve and shaved down the muscle tissue. She is still very dizzy due to a very low blood count, and she also is having a high heart rt between 100 & 119. They put her on Toprelxl 50 mg 2x a day. She is wondering has this happened to anyone else? She can walk to the bathroom and back and she gets dizzy, when will the walking get better?
Thanks,
Ellie's friend Keri

Re: myectomy tomorrow
Please let Ellie know I am thinking about her, I spoke w/ her on the phone and she is a super nice girl! And yes, I had issues (and others here too) w/ low blood counts after the myectomy. I needed several (lost count) blood transfusions and I was as right as rain again. As for the high heart rate I also had that happen a few times right after surgery. I was put back on toprol as well. Sending her good thoughts!! BarbDiagnosed Aug 2006 Myectomy 10/25/06 ICD 07/18/08
