  • Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

Now that the 25mg and 50mg generic Toprol XL pills are out, does anyone have any experiences to report? Are the generics working/feeling the same for you?

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

My pharmacy tried to switch me and I said no way.. Co pay cost on the new generic was 12 and I have been paying 20 for the real stuff.
I think I will wait and see what pops up.. some generic meds have came into question lately?

I haven't tried them yet, although I have some coming in the mail which I might experiment with (but I raised **** with the mail order pharmacy about them, and need to get my prescription changed so it doesn't happen again!)

I am not too optimistic about them, having felt much worse on the generic metoprolol tartrate, which is short acting.

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

In addition to the 25mg and 50mg generic Toprol XL, the 100mg generic is also out. I found that out last week when I went to pick up my prescription and found that my pharmacy had filled my Rx with the new 100mg generic.

I asked to speak to the pharmacist before accepting the generic. When she explained that she had not consulted my doctor, but it was their policy (based on what the insurers want, I'm sure) to switch to generics as soon as they come out, I said that I did not want to switch until/unless my doctor OK'd the switch. She immediately re-did the Rx for Topol XL as written and I walked out with my 90 day supply.

As I will be leaving on a trip out of the country at the start of September, I did not want to experiment at this time.

I would like to hear from anyone that has taken the generic, especially the new 100mg dose.

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

It is kind of weird to read this and for me to think back. At sometime when I worked and changed jobs well over 10 years ago, and got a different insurance I immediately got a letter from the insurance company telling me that they were switching me to atenolol 25 mgs from Topral 50 mgs XL daily. They said that my doctor had approved it. This is the same doctor; cardiologist, who misdiagnosed me for my entire time with him ( over 18 years). I did not question it and knew immediately the switch was cost/ insurance, generated.

After that switch my symptoms increased steadily, my health deteriorated steadilly and my BP went up. The doctor increased the atenolol gradually as I approached my diagnosis. Right before I left him I went up to 150mgs. It was not holding the symptoms down. When I got diagnosed in 2000, 2 weeks later, they bumped me right up to 200mgs and I had to split it to 2 times a day. Eventually I went to 300mgs a day and even 400mgs for a short time before myectomy..my brain was not tolerating the high dose but my heart was.

I think back and say what a smuck I was back then when I did not advocate for myself!

Thanks to Lisa, to our supportive specialists and to this web site we are all so very enlightened now.

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

FYI for those on 100mg+ doses:

The manufacturer for the generic 50 mg. is different from the manufacturer for the generic 100 mg. (Sandoz is making the 50 mg.). So, if the generic 100 mg. isn't working for you, you might want to try 2 generic 50 mg. instead (your doc can write a 50mg b.i.d. prescription), and that might work. On many prescription plans, the generics are MUCH cheaper.

I suppose it could work the other way, too if you're on 50 mg. -- get your doctor to write for the 100's, and split the pill -- if the generic 50's don't work for you.

Of course, the other problem with generics is that after the first 180 days, there could be multiple manufacturers, so you can never really be sure which ones your 'scrip will be filled with unless you ask. Wouldn't be unusual for one manufacturer's pills to work and the other not.

            -----------

Also, it's not necessarily the insurance company's or pharmacy's fault when your refill gets switched to generic. Here in NY, it's the law that if there's a generic, and the doctor didn't initial in the DAW (dispense as written) box, the pharmacist has to fill with generic unless the patient specifically requests otherwise. Even if the original fill was the brand name.

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

I received my new prescription of generic Toprol XL a few days ago. I did have a few more pvc's than usually yesterday and thought my heart was beating a little faster than normal. I thought I would give it a few more days before I talked to the pharmacist about receiving the real stuff again.

I don't think extended release tablets are supposed to be split like that. It sort of defeats the purpose.

I think in this case, its ok. they are "scored". my last refil, I got generics. But if I recall, I think the brand-name ones were scored, too.

as long as you don't chew them up (yuck!) or grind them, the "xr" effect remains.

Yup, the brand name ones are scored, too.

Sometimes, it's not OK to split extended release pills because it exposes an uncoated part (the surface that got split), and the coating is important to the way the pill dissolves.

Happens not to be the case with Toprol XL/Metoprolol Succinate Extended Release. They're OK to split.

...or so says my doctor and confirmed w/AstraZeneca.

Good to know about the splitting.

Last night I took my first dose of the generic, so we'll see how I feel. I had about a week's worth of name-brand pills, but I didn't want to wait to use those up before trying this. I'm experiencing a LOT of anxiety lately so hopefully that won't cloud my impressions.

Given that I had problems with the generic non-ER version, I truly hope the generic of this ER works just as well. It would be MUCH cheaper for me if it did.

Re: Experiences with Generic Toprol XL?

OK, here is my three-day check-in.

So far, I feel no different with the generic than I did with the brand. No news is good news in this case.

I'll report back on Sunday; that will make it one week. Then I'll report a week from this Sunday. I figure if there are any issues, they would certainly make themselves known by then.

(Disclaimer: Yes, I know everyone is different and might react differently.)

Thanks, for being our guinea pig! I am sure that the next three month supply that I order through my insurance's mail-in pharmacy will be the generic. I have little choice about this, so knowing that you are doing well so far is nice.

I know that felix tried the generic Toprol, but decided it was no working as well as the "real thing", so he switched back.
