  • James is now taking Toprol XL 100mg

My 12 year old son James who was just shocked two weeks ago by his AICD, is now taking 50mg Toprol in the morning when he gets up and 50mg at night. He is telling me is ALOT more tired and he is also sleeping alot more. He is sleeping 14+ hours. He will be starting back to school in a little over a month and won't be able to sleep this long then. I am just trying to figure out is there anything I can do that won't make him so tired. When he was taking 50mg he was not his tired. Thanks for the info! Janet

    Hi, Janet,

This is a problem, but it may be more of a good thing than a bad one. My suggestion would be to let him sleep for now and recover from all the stress of the past few months. Many teenagers sleep extremely long hours during the summer. In a few weeks he may adjust to the Toprol and the sleep won't hurt him. If this continues to be a problem when school starts, deal with it then. I will pray that he gets lots of sleep for a couple of weeks and then gets his energy back.

If he is still sleeping this much when you get closer to the end of summer, talk with the doctor and consider trying a different beta blocker.

Janet, Rhoda made a good point. Each time I have had to increase my beta it has caused the same. The increased sedation effect should back off as the adjustment increases. Make sure he takes in very sufficient fluids as he will feel more sluggish if dehydrated and sleeping so much he can not be taking in enough fluid( water , mostly). If things do not stabilize in about 3 weeks alert the doctor. Also , check his BP and Pulse lying and standing , to make sure he is not going too low. Keep track of this during any changes or increases.

      I hope he does better.
