  • Chinese Traditional Medicine Stopped

Okay, Okay, Okay! I admit it. I am a quixotic idiot. I knew that trying Chinese traditional medicine only so I could show the students I respect their culture was not a good reason for doing so. But when I realized last week that the Chinese docs seemed to have no idea what they were doing - just throwing concoctions at me, I should have quit while I was ahead. But, I did and do feel that these concoctions relieved some of my heart pain, so I was willing to keep trying. But last Thursday they changed the meds again and I began retaining even more fluid than I had. I gained about 8 pounds in 3 days. So, last night I stopped completely and by this morning had lost three and expect I have lost most of the rest today. I had been having problems with fluid retention for months, but this was much more than before. So, I am off the Chinese meds for good.

So all of you who wish have my permission to say, "I told you so." even if you only told me in your mind!

Rhoda - When are you coming back to the states? I am worried about that CHF stuff. It needs to be straightened out.

Are you coming back for good, or only for the summer?

      Rhoda,
I’m sorry to hear you totally gave up on Chinese medicine. Quite frankly I couldn’t figure out how a fungus that is used in cooking could do any more for you then some other kinds of foods – but I was hoping.

When you think about it, the philosophically of the western approach is similar in many ways. For my hyperlipidemia I must avoid fats, most oils, and fatty foods. For my diabetes I must avoid carbohydrates, and for my kidneys I must avoid proteins, and for my chronic water retention problems and kidneys I must avoid salt and salt substitutes. Then of course to try to keep my blood sugar levels more or less even, I have to eat every four hours.

Thus, instead of adding a specific food or mixture of foods, with me, foods were eliminated. Everything I put in my mouth is cheating in one way or another, and my wife, being quite concerned with my staying alive, gives me one food lecture after another – even when she makes the meal herself. She is also convinced that the way to better health is to exercise, and is constantly trying to figure out ways to get me to walk – even on days when it is a trial for me just to walk to the car in the garage. I know her motivation, so I endure the lectures on food and exercise in peace, and take it as signs of love. I’ve repeated told her the way things are, but that doesn’t satisfy her concerns, and the lectures continue.

About water retention, some days I’m so full of water the skin on my legs is so stretched the skin itself hurts. I eat out a lot, and so get much more salt then I should, even avoiding the obviously salty items on the menu. Still, I broke down and tasted a potato chip the other day, and the salt taste was so intense it burned my mouth. I wonder if that last Chinese medicine you were given contained salt in one manner or another, and that triggered your water retention problem. Well, it’s now June 9th, and you’re almost home. Maybe a thorough health work-up will lead to better control and more relief for you.

Burt i feel your pain with the fluid retention i keep the pitted edema, the only way my dad lost all of his was going into the hospital and they would put IV lasix in him, i'm beginning to think that's what they are going to have to do to me, i'm going to ask the doctor when i go tomorrow I was looking at myself this morning and i'm really swollen, so i guess i'm going to have to convince this doctor there is something wrong, you take care

Well I won't tell you I told you so. I didn't know what to expect. I'm glad that you stopped taking it and your water level is dropping. (Boy, that sounds like you're a river at flood stage.... ) Anyway, take care until you can get back here for your specialist to see you!

            Hi, all,

I am down four more pounds this morning, so I have one to go on the ones that I gained with the Chinese meds and 2-3 more that I seem to always have. It is amazing how good a little less water feels!

School does not officially get out until after the middle of July, but we have arranged our schedule to leave on July 3 so we can be there for the fireworks on the 4th ! Our prayer for our nation is that the only fireworks we will see will be the ones we Americans send up that day in celebration of our birth as a nation.

              Hi Rhoda,

Do you have a picture you could post as your Avatar? I sure would love to see what you look like. I don’t want to be accused of not even knowing what my friends look like.

See my picture? Did you see my picture wink at you? Oh well, at least the thought was there.
