  • Alternative to Metoprolol?

    Hello HCM family!

I have been on Metoprolol for over 2 years, 100mg from diagnosis 8/1/11 to surgery on 4/5/12, then down to 75mg since. I gained the honorary 25 pounds since I started the meds, and it seems like the side effects are getting worse. I have horrible horrible nightmares every night, along with losing my hair, dry itchy skin, tingling hands, hoarseness, confusion, side pain, abdominal pain (minimal), hallucinations, blurred vision, occasional tunnel vision, ocular migraines, joint pain, chills and I'm sooooo tired all the time but can barely sleep 5 hours.

I was wondering if anyone else had these types of side effects from Metoprolol and what medication they switched to? It really does help with my HCM symptoms, but I feel like the quality of my life isn't where it should be, especially after having the myectomy. My echo in July went really well and my doctor said my heart looks like there has never been anything wrong, the words amazing and miracle were tossed around as well I would like to take advantage of a "good looking" heart and be as active as I can and enjoy this life extension I was given.

So, if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on what to discuss with my doctor in addition to the list of side effects I've been having, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Happy Holidays!

    Misi,
All medications have side effects. I have no side effects on Metropolol, but had horrible side effects to Atenolol, a different beta blocker. I suggest you talk to your physician and ask to be switched. Sometimes, it's a trial and error process to find the one that you get the best results with minimal side effects. Don't give up, there is one out there!

Oye! - Ya know when you see a TV commercial on a drug and the have to legally say the side effects? Of course they do this incredibly fast so the words like rectal bleeding, cancer, and insanity are glossed over. You, my dear, have had your share! Yes, call the doc and seek a different BB. (note: as a cost saving measure, consider an initial 30 day qty as a trial). If your local doc is the prescriber - have him contact your HCM expert. No one should have to go through all that!

Thank you everyone! I need to do something, woke up screaming last night and had bit my lip so hard that it was bleeding. My doctor's office called today to schedule my checkup and I can't get in until February 6th and my doctor wants me to stay on the metoprolol until he checks me out and does another echo at that appointment.

Thats a long time to deal with those symptoms. If possible, make yourself available to fill any cancellations they have. Stress the urgency.

                Re: Alternative to Metoprolol?

When I first started metoprolol, I had similar symptoms, so dizzy that the room spun around and nightmares that were like I was awake and still physically fighting off the murderer or whatever.

I changed to atenolol and have had NO symptoms whatsoever.
In fact, medication alone has mitigated my heart symptoms so I feel very comfortable. No more chest pains, palpitations, or SOB. All in the past.

Now thinking, maybe my thyroid is messed up. I was on 25 mg and Ommen upped it two 371/2 mg. Feel very well after that, but hair started to fall out. I hope this helps. Change!

                    Re: Alternative to Metoprolol?

Don't forget to talk to a really experienced pharmacist. I think that they are the often forgotten heroes of health care. Docs are good at prescribing meds for symptoms, but a good pharmacists is sometimes better at considering side effects, interactions and alternative meds in the same families. I'll never say they over-rule the doctor specialist, but they offer good insight.

FWIW, I have been on the max dose of Atenolol for 9 years now. My GP was chasing my hypertension and soon after he doubled my dose of Atenolol, I told him that my symptoms of SOB and pain were curiously diminished, he had that "AH HA moment" and sent me to a specialist to confirm his suspicion of HCM. I have had no side effects from Atenolol besides increased comfort.

I sure hope you can find a change to make you feel better.

Angus, I never thought about talking to the pharmacist, great idea! Thank you so much! It's time for me to refill so I will talk to the pharmacist and my cardiologist and maybe they can do something before my Feb appt. By the way, good luck with your surgery!!

Spoke to my doctor today and he said I can't change from metoprolol due to the PVCs. Feeling a bit discouraged, actually more like a lot discouraged.....

                          Re: Alternative to Metoprolol?

I have had very different reactions to the same medication when using different formulations. For example,
I feel much better on the brand Toprol than I do on the generic metoprolol succinate. And I have tested this extensively. Have you tried Toprol? That might be the difference and it doesn't involve changing prescriptions.
On another note, I would wonder about a doctor who didn't take my complaints seriously. Are you seeing an HCM specialist? It has taken me many years and trials to find the med combination that works for me and it involves a lot of trial and error. You really need a doctor who will listen to your concerns and be there for you to help you find the combination that works best for you.

                            Hello Missie:

I was diagnosed July 2013, started Metropolol in October. I have every one of the symptoms you have. I gained almost 30 pounds immediately. Have lost most of my hair, Itchy skin, abdominal pain, hands tingling, exhausted all of the time, every one of the symptoms you have. I'm scheduled for the myectomy on February 13th. My cardiologist here in NY just changed the medication to Cardizem, I haven't taken it yet. Tomorrow will be day 1, I will let you know how that goes.

How was the recovery from the surgery? I am glad to hear that your heart is looking so great.

                              Re: Alternative to Metoprolol?

I called CCF today to make an appointment with Dr. Popovic, my cardiologist there. They called me back and said they were no longer in my insurance network. I was not made aware of that so now I don't have any COEs in my network. I have requested an updated list of Hospitals and cardiologists from my insurance and I'm going to start calling the docs to see if any of them specialize in HCM. My local cardiologist doesn't. He told me that my reactions are most likely from anxiety instead of the meds. I guess that was a kind way of saying it's all in my head.

I have only taken the Toprol XL and it made me a zombie, I slept all the time and could hardly stay awake and couldn't function. I'm really sensitive to medications and if there is a side effect, I'm likely to have it. I have been that way my whole life.

Thank you, I was starting to feel like maybe I am just complaining and you made me feel better, I'm the patient and my doc should really listen to my concerns!
