  • Meds for anxiety

I have been having an increasing problem w/ palpitations. My local dr. thinks that my anxiety issues are contributing to them and visa-veresa. I have terrible anxiety and panic attacks. They only thing I take right now is .25mg of Xanax as needed up to 2 times a day, which doesn't seem to be doing much for me anymore. Does anyone else suffer from anxiety? What do you take? I just want to feel normal again and not worry when we go out to do stuff.............

    Heather,
You can talk to your doc about the possibility of upping your Xanax dose or switching you to something else, like Ativan.

        Heather:

I have been on Paroxetine for 15-20 years. Yesterday my new GP recommended I switch to Lexapro as the Paroxetine tends to make you gain weight and I have been having trouble keeping the weight off.

          Re: Meds for anxiety

Lexapro is intended for long term use (not just several weeks) and works well for anxiety. Heather, you might want to discuss this option with the Doc who prescribed your Xanax.

Thank you all! I have made an appt for Monday to discuss all of this with my GP. I have taken Prozac in the past, but wanted to try something different and hopefully a little more fast acting.

                  Re: Meds for anxiety

Ellie, that is what scares me is that I am at the point where when I leave my house, I am a nervous wreck! I'm not sure what I think is going to happen, but things like going out to eat, going to the grocery store, and many other things that people do everyday, are getting harder and harder! When I go out to eat w/ my family, instead of it being enjoyable, I am thinking "when can we get out of here............hurry up and eat.........." It's awful! I've never been this way! I have always been outgoing and loved being around people. Now, it takes all I have to take my kids to the mall! I feel this overwhelming sense of fear and doom, my breathing changes, I get light headed.............I don't know how to fix it on my own!

                    Re: Meds for anxiety

I can relate there have been so many times when i was with my kids shopping and then all of a sudden , I would grab them and run out of the store I just wanted to go home. i guess we feel safe in our homes ..My kids are older now and will talk me out of it but I need to take a xanax and in like 15 min i start to feel bettter ....This is not the life I wanted but we need to deal with it and NOT let it control us....When my friends say lets go out to eat, all I think about is lets order in ...Do you take your xanax before you go out? my xanax usally last 4hrs then I need another one if I am out....when I am home I can go a little longer ...I hate to drive to, there are so many times i had to pull over take my xanax and wait till it kicked in..I have tried prozac ,zoloft ,lexapro and more..They did nothing for me..I am not depressed If anything they made me feel worse...I think this is just a part of HCM and we have to learn how to deal with it..I have a boyfriend who loves to go out and eat I tell him dont threaten me with that lol.......I just rather sit home watch a movie and eat....But this is not good for us we need to get out there and realize nothing is gonna happen... I have been going thru this for 11 yrs now and im still here....So it gotta be in our head also why are we find when we are home ..i will never figure this out....I have to say xanax is the only thing that helps me get out ....My kids can tell stories about how many times we ran out of places cause mommy didnt feel good ..we laugh at it now but it wasnt funny when it happen....I try to joke about it maybe it will help ,but when i go out with friends my boys will warn them if you cant find our mother she is probably in her car taking her medicined and she will be back when it kicks in or she will call one of us to come get her....I really hate it too i just wish someone could figure out why we get like this and feel this way it is aweful....I am here if you ever want to talk just PM me Ellie

                      Re: Meds for anxiety

I haven't seen any studies linking anxiety as an HCM problem specifically, nor have I heard of any studies showing medical marijuana use's effectiveness as a treatment for anxiety. It shows some promise lowering ocular pressure in the eyes, curbing nausea and stimulating appetite in chemo patients, but uses beyond that are not well studied, and there are safer alternatives even for those uses.

If you're anxious and it's because you have a heart disease, and it's all a bit overwhelming at first to mentally deal with that, I can see how you might feel anxious, and be hyper aware of palpitations, etc. so obviously there's a casual connection, and for me personally, I'd seek out talk therapy through the cardiac rehabilitation dept of your hospital as they specialize in exactly what would probably help the most, cardiac-centric talk therapy, and cardiac rehab is a wonderful and healthy stress-reliever as well... HIGHLY recommended! Anyone who feels an anti-anxiety drug helps them short or long term, I say go for it, but smoking of any kind is really not a good idea. If a doctor of mine suggested medical marijuana for anxiety or heart palpitations, I'd get a new doctor.

                        Re: Meds for anxiety

I was dx'd w/ HCM at the age of 14, which was 24 yrs. ago, so it's not new to me, but the anxiety issues are fairly new. They started a few years ago and have gotten worse. I think I link the anxiety w/ my HCM because when I feel light headed or palpitations I don't know if it's related to my anxiety or HCM. I am frustrated w/ myself because I feel like I am causing more promblems for myself! I definitely don't need any more problems.......I just don't know how to get over them. I don't think I would smoke anything to help w/ anxiety, but if there is a medicinal alternative I would try it. I am going to see my GP Mon to discuss my options!

I Do feel HCM and anxiety are related in some form . If you look at most of these post there are a lot of us on some kind of anxiety medicine.....I for one was not happy when I started xanax but I have to say its the only thing that works...As far as smoking I would be way to nervous, I wouldnt even try it when I was younger ...I just feel that uping the xanax is bad also .I am scared of long term affects, but those goes for all MEDS.. I have to agree with you smoking pot cant be all that good to its a drug..I just want answers ...Also my Dr would never recommend pot I wouldnt even dare to ask....lol ..... that is why I am asking here.....I just wanted to know if anyone else was treated with medical majuwana for anxiety ..This does work for my friend .....I say stick with what works .......... Re: Meds for anxiety

                            Ellie,
I understand your concerns. I'm not sure that anyone will talk about medical marajuana useage. It's possible, but I would be surprised. I understand it works for your friend, but I don't believe they have HCM. You might want to do a little research on the effects of Marajuana on the circulatory system (blood vessels and heart). Here is an article that will help you understand why this is not a good idea with HCM.

                            http://www.ehow.com/about_5394966_ma...ry-system.html

If you read the message board much, you will see that many patients are misdiagnosed with Anxiety, when they don't have anxiety at all. They have HCM, which can produce similar symptoms, especially during times of stress (increased HR, SOB, chest pain). I was never diagnosed with Anxiety, but I've had issues with it at times. I never quite understood how the 2 very different diagnoses could look alike, until I had my own experience with high HR (sinus tachycardia - no arrythmia, just fast) and with arrythmias (SVT - supraventricular tachycardia). I quickly understood how the 2 could get confused. I felt like I was going to unwillingly crawl out of my skin. Bursting into tears, just wild stuff. Once my medications were adjusted and my HR was at a slower rate, I felt much, much, much more like myself. Tachycardia is not a good thing for a stiff heart, which normally doesn't relax enough. Add to it decreased filling time due to a tachycardia and trust me, it isn't pleasant at all. And we all know that we don't want any more damage than we already have.

Are you sure it is anxiety? Could it be a rhythmn disturbance? Just asking.
