alcohol ablation a success, waiting on need for pacemaker

    Hi All,
My mother in law pulled through successfully, we were all quite relieved and excited at the same time! Surgeon did explain she had more enlargement than the common upper area, and they did insert a temporary "pacer". She is being monitored carefully for the need of a permanent device, will probably know today.

p.s. apparently it was the surgeon who had performed 100+ ablations, not at this hospital.

Thanks for your input and good wishes, so glad i found this site!

    Hi and welcome,

Sounds like Rhoda and Reenie and Leon have covered it. Sorry I have no personal experience with an ablation. Best of luck to you.

Thank you, Reenie! That, with God's will is my mother in law's prayer, if the alcohol septal procedure is meant to be successful. Scott & White is a highly esteemed facility in central Texas: for those interested, I am pulling the following from their website:

    A Top 100 Hospital

Scott & White has now joined the list of the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals in the country. Based upon clinical excellence, operating efficiency and community responsiveness, a recent Solucient LLC benchmark study names Scott & White among the elite major teaching hospitals in the country. Scott & White is the largest multi-speciality practice in Texas, with more than 500 physicians who care for patients at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple and at our 15 regional clinics throughout Central Texas. In addition, they deliver care to members of the Scott & White Health Plan, one of the highest rated plans in the nation.

Also the clinical educational site for The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, every physician here excels at communications, from teacher to student and physician to patient.
Scott & White Memorial Hospital is listed among the "Top 100 Hospitals" in America for cardiovascular, stroke and orthopedics care and the Scott & White Health Plan has consistently been recognized among the highest rated health plans for member satisfaction.

Hi. I'm sorry I missed this until now. Rhoda has given you a lot of great information already. I agree that you should be comfortable with whoever does the surgery. I've never heard of that hospital but that doesn't mean that they won't do a good job. Please give Lisa a call, phone number on the bottom of this page. She will be in the office tomorrow I think. I'll pray for wisdom on the family's part and on the doctor's part. Best of luck.

    Hi there.

I am sorry I have nothing more to offer in the way of wisdom. Rhoda has asked many of the right questions. I just logged on and read through your notes back and forth. Be assured of our prayers.

    Peace,

    Leon

This will be my last reply, because I have got to get to grading papers!

So, just a farewell, will pray that if they would botch it or if it is not ideal for your mother-in-law, that they will decide that it cannot be done. Then you can get her to a HCM center and feel more confident.

Meanwhile, rest tonight and trust that the outcome will be what is best for your mother-in-law!

Oh, Rhoda, thank you again (woman to woman!). Needless to say, I'm a bit hesitant, always have many questions whether related to my or other's medical treatment. Fortunately my mother in law is very inquisitive as well and has been eager to read up on my internet research. Unfortunately we are a good distance apart and I cannot be as involved as I would like. My father in law has had bypass surgery at this same facility with great success (no problem after 3+yrs), so I believe they both have a considerable level of faith in having this done there. The concerns you expressed are valid ones and I appreciate you pointing them out. I sure wish I had come across this site before today! I welcome any more ideas, questions, etc you have for us!

Oops! Sorry about the mistake in your sex. I have no idea how I concluded that you were a man, since I am a woman!

Since no one else seems to be picking this up, I will make a few comments. Certainly it is pretty late in the game to change now, but if you feel hesitation tomorrow about the wisdom of her having this at this hospital, I would cancel it and get her to one of the big HCM centers. It sounds like even the doctors there are uncertain as to whether this is what is best for her. The fact that she was given nitroglycerine shows that someone was not up on HCM, but the fact that that occurred in the ER is not too surprising. It is a good sign that someone subsequently picked up on the problem and warned her not to take it.

As far as the idea of her having an ablation is concerned, I am surprised that no one else has commented because others have much more information than I. Some people here have had very successful ablations and love them. Others have had problems. I think the concensus is that ablations are better for older people than for younger ones, so your mother is in the better group.

I will definitely pray for wisdom for all of you. I love the fact that you are clearly a loving family. You are asking for your mother-in-law and it turns out that she is your husband's step mother! A great group, it sounds like to me!

Good questions: none of us on this side have been checked as she is my husband's step-mother actually! Per my in-laws, I believe several have been done at S&W, no exact # given. Only 2 requiring pacemakers, no specific survival information given. We are out of town, have not been in on consults. Another IMPORTANT point: she was given nitroglycerin upon arriving at ER, given more to take home, PRN, later told NOT to take nitro as that would create more havoc with HCM!!

Next questions: How many alcohol ablations has Scott and White Hospital done? How many has the surgeon personally done? What is their success rate? This procedure should be done by people who have as much experience as possible.

Also, if this is your mother-in-law, have your wife and other family members been checked?

Sorry to have only questions, not answers.

    Rhoda

    Hi Rhoda,
She is having the procedure at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas...I have just this afternoon come across the HCMA website, don't believe an HCM specialist had been involved to this point.
    Thank you!
