  • Cold/Cough Medicines

I'm going to call Dylan's PC but I thought I might get a faster response here being as it's late. Dylan has had a nasty cold for over a week now with a cough that just keeps getting worse. I keep telling myself everytime he coughs that he's keeping it from settling in his lungs, however, it's gotten to the point where ithe coughing is keeping him up at night and his teacher said something about it at school today.
So I asked the pharmacist about it and she said that he could have Robitussin DM - it's a cough suppresant. She said it's the decongestant that he's not supposed to have. I think I remember that as being correct - does anyone else know more specifically?
    Thanx as always

    Re: Cold/Cough Medicines

    Hi Dee
Everytime I get a cough I take Robitussin-DM as recommended by both my family physician and my cardiologist. I don't get palipitations or seem to have any problems with it.

I do suggest you contact your doctor due to the fact your son is so young and what's right for me may not be right for your son. It does help the cough for about 3 1/2 hrs.

      Re: Cold/Cough Medicines

      Hi Dee -

I just wanted to put my two cents in here and let you know what all of Keanu's doctors have said... and that is NO DECONGESTANTS. When Keanu gets a cold, I give him Delsym for his cough and an antihistimine if necessary. If he is congested, I have only the vaporizor/humidifier alternative that I have been told to use. I get the same message from Keanu's two cardiologists and his regular physician. Still, everybody is a bit different, so definitely call his doctors...

Good luck. Hope he starts feeling better real soon.

        Re: Cold/Cough Medicines

Kylee had a horrible cough a couple weeks ago. The Robitussin Pediatric Cough (ONLY) does not have anything that interferes with the heart. On top of that, we gave her Pediatric Benadryl for the congestion. The cool mist humidifier at night also seemed to help. Hope he gets to feeling better!

          Re: Cold/Cough Medicines

Thank you for the suggestions and information. Dylan's PC concurred and we used Robitussin DM and Children's Benadryl. He's on the upswing again
