Rob, welcome! The threshhold test I'm referring to is how much umph it takes for the device to pace. However, it may simply be a matter of which device a person has, too. Not all ICD's have the pacing capacity, so maybe those are the ones they perform the NIPS on. In my husband's case, the ICD is set to pace him out an arrhythmia first, and if that doesn't work, to give him a preliminary shock. If that doesn't work then it lets loose with the full kick. There are so many variables when we talk about these devices that maybe it's naive of me to try to lump them in the same category sometimes.
