  • It's my turn.

I've been a member since the beginning of June and spend at least an hour each and every day reading both present and previous posts. This is such a wonderful support group.

Today I got the call that I am scheduled for an ICD for next Wednesday. I have to say that I am very much relieved that this is the course my cardiologist is recommending for me. A team reviewed my "case" on Tuesday and determined, as Lisa said would probably happen, that I am not a candidate for septal ablation at this time. I've decided to live with my symptoms which really don't stop me from anything and have the most important procedure to prolong my life. The person who called from the hospital told me I would check in at 1:00 and be out the next day by noon - I joked like the cleaning? I have a business meeting I need to be at on Friday and am hopeful I'll feel up to it. Am I being realistic thinking I will be able to attend? Would some of you share with me what the recovery was like and how long it took? I'm aware of not lifting my arm which won't be a big deal if I can just remember not to.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: It's my turn.

    Nancy,
Since I just got my ICD two weeks ago, I can speak from my experience pretty clearly, I think. I think you should be able to make your business meeting on Friday, but I do not think you will feel like working an entire day. I did not, and have not, stayed in bed any time since several hours before I was actually supposed to get up. (An aide let me get up before I was supposed to because I was asking to go to the toilet and the nurse was on the phone, so the aide couldn't find out when I was allowed to be up.) However, an entire day at the office would have been too much for me two days after surgery. Four days after surgery I did ride in a car for a 12 hour trip including two hour stop over to meet my husband's relatives at a restaurant. I would not recommend that to anyone because I had considerable trouble with chf for the next week, but it does show what is possible.
