    External defibrillator (aed) FOR CHILDREN

    Hi!


    Does any one have experience using external dfibrillator for little children?
    (younger than 8 years old)
    I read there are new devices released this year by "Medtronics" (Feb. 10, 2003).
    Any suggestions? Any info?
    Can it be (temporary) alternative for an implanted defibrillator?

    This is a strange issue. AED's are not currently recommended for small children - but I do know of cases where they have been used and saved lives. You are dealing with issues that are complicated and technolgy is complicated.
    It comes down to a judgement call - if the child is in cardiac arrest - and you have access to the defib - what do you do? I know what I would do - but that is like I said a judgement call.

    Dx age 12 current age 46 and counting!
    lost: 5 family members to HCM (SCD, Stroke, CHF)
    Others diagnosed living with HCM (or gene +) include - daughter, niece, nephew, cousin, sister and many many friends!
    Therapy - ICD (implanted 97, 01, 04 and 11, medication
    Currently not obstructed
    Complications - unnecessary pacemaker and stroke (unrelated to each other)

      I have been working with Philips Medical as one of the sponsors for FREE echocardiogram equipment to our heart screening events. Philips Medical is also a manufacturer of AED equipment. They promote their equipment is the only one available for use on small children under 55 pounds or 8 years of age. Check out this link:

        We read the link with my husband.
        Tomorrow we wil have an appointment with the cardiologist and will have to decide about our next steps with our son.

          I found the best place to buy AEDS with Pediatric Pads. How did I get this information? I am a school district nurse in Duluth, MN and have spent about the entire (!!!) fall sports season pulling together all the protocol info from 16 schools and 20 of our nurses only to stumble across a site that has 3 model protocols posted. I was amazed to see the wealth of information & intelligent based articles on Cardiac issues. the site is called www.MomsTeam.com. Since I am a cardiac trained RN I will tell you this is very good information for all of us and it is FREE.

          Then the best part they sell the AEDs for dollars over the wholesale price. Give them a try if you need top quality AEDs for a great Price.

            YES - IT is VERY important that any school, company, public space to have a device -
            But - with the situation of my son - we decided to implant the AICD on his body.
            He is doing well and we are happy to know he is protected, since his situation is severe.
