  • Husband getting ICD: help set my mind at ease?

  • #2
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and just looking for some feed back on your experiences and maybe some advice. My husband just found out he has hcm...he had atrial flutters and his heart started racing last January that ended up in a visit to hospital. Since then has had all kinds of tests and was told hcm is what he has. Genetic testing was just done.

implanted defibrillator is now on the table, and this decision is scary, afraid of unnecessary shocks damaging the heart more or worse....is there anyone that has this and can you set my mind at ease. I'm so scared for my husband .

      Hello Mommy6,
Yes, the thought of an ICD is very scary for most people who need one, but it is also comforting to know that if your heart goes into a rhythm that is life threatening, the ICD can save your life!! This forum is a bit quiet support wise so let me give you some suggestions:
      1) If you want to make sure that the ICD recommendation is well founded.....get a second opinion from an HCM specialty center in your country;Canada; which would be at Toronto General or a USA Center of Excellence which are listed by state on the first page of this website.
      2) Call the HCMA office and get a phone consult with Lisa Salberg
      3) Join the HCMA Facebook group which is very active
      4) Look for an ICD support Group on line.
Blessings to you and your husband.
