  • Decided to put s-icd, but kind of worry after dr visit

    Hello, everyone!

When you decided to implant s-icd, did you ask your doc how many procedures he did before?

Mine said he did about 30 ish.

Also because of the teaching hospital, the student will be there doing the surgery under his supervision.

Now I'm wondering if I should implant it somewhere else,

    Any thoughts?

The most important thing for you is to have confidence in the doctor doing your device implantation. If you don't feel confident then do not proceed. In an emergency procedure we don't always have a choice, but in this case it seems your implantation is an elective procedure.
Generally at teaching hospitals it is not medical students that are allowed to do procedures but residents... those who have finished medical school and declared a specialty. We all realize these up coming specialists need to get their experience some how....but it is your choice whether you care to be part of that learning experience or not. The " 30 ish " number doesn't seem like a very large number to me...but I am not sure The time over which those 30 were done would be important. Thirty in the last 6 mos? Or 30 in the last 16 years?
I do not have an ICD so have not researched any physicians. Are you at a COE? You may want to call he HCMA office and discuss this with them.....they have a wealth of experience and knowledge.
    After years of symptoms:
    Officially Diagnosed HOCM 2006
    Myectomy 3/11/13 at non-COE
    Extended Myectomy 7/23/14
At Mayo with Dr. Joseph Dearani

Thank you, Jill, for your reply. I definitely don't want to be a part of some upcoming doctor's learning curve. I did my research and most complications happen during learning curve ( long time procedure, not enough big pocket or too big a pocket for the device), so don't feel comfortable with a student at all.

I was researching Mayo, hopefully, will find some doctors who implant s-icd and have enough procedures done.

I'll call HCMA and ask them too.

Maybe other members can mention their doctors who they did the procedure with? It would really help.

Mayo has a lot of info on Facebook as well as their website and utube. There are also support groups for those with ICDs that may give you a broader perspective .....keep us posted.
